If your baby is under two months old, here is the single most useful thing I can tell you: the scattered, clockless sleep you are looking at is biology running exactly on schedule. Nothing is late, because the machinery that could be late has not switched on yet. This article is the reassurance most sleep apps know and don't say — they simply go quiet under two months and let you fill the silence at 3 a.m. with "my baby isn't doing the thing the app is waiting for."
There is no clock yet
A newborn has no day and no night — literally. There is no daily melatonin rhythm in the first weeks of life; one first becomes observable around 9–12 weeks and only steadies at 13–15. The 24-hour rest–activity pattern starts emerging around week six and is definite only after week twelve. Even sleep pressure itself — the homeostat every wake-window chart on the internet quietly assumes — is still coming online during the second month. In one dataset of 156,989 logged sessions, the first three months show sleep bouts scattered across the entire 24 hours.
"Day/night confusion" is therefore a misleading name. Your baby is not confused; your baby is simply not yet running the program. It cannot be trained in early or hurried — it matures on its own, and it will.
What is actually normal right now
- Sleep in stretches of roughly 2–4 hours, at any hour, driven by feeds — 4 to 8 sleeps a day, none of them owed to a schedule.
- Wake windows of about 35–60 minutes, and never much past 1–2 hours — a ceiling, not a floor. Many babies need to go back down after 30–45 minutes.
- Around six weeks (counted from the due date, not the birth date): peak fussiness, crying up to ~3 hours a day, concentrated in the evening. This is the documented worst of it, and it recedes.
- Also around six weeks, the first real structure arrives: the longest sleep block — 4 to 6 hours — settles into the evening, and true social smiles show up as consolation.
- About one baby in five has colic. Their drowsy cues are effectively invisible, and everything above shifts roughly two months later. Still normal.
What this app does about it — and why it's quiet too, differently
Under two months, NaniNani proposes no schedule and no steering, for the same reason every serious app withholds one: there is nothing yet for a schedule to anchor to, and a prediction shown while the honest error is close to an hour would be noise dressed as guidance. Where I part ways with the industry is that this app tells you so, in words, on the screen — because silence isn't neutral, and the explanation is the product at this age. So for these weeks: feed on demand, sleep where sleep happens, protect a rough 1–2 hour awake ceiling, get bright light in the morning and dim light at night to help the clock along, and log what you can bear to. The logs are not homework — they are the material your baby's own patterns will be recognized in, the moment there are patterns to recognize. Around two months, the clock starts switching on, and the app will start — gently, loosely — having opinions.
Until then, if a stretch of days looks like it was dealt from a shuffled deck: that is the expected output of a healthy newborn. You are not doing it wrong. There is no "it" yet to do wrong.
